Man City travel to Everton on Wednesday with hopes of getting back in the title race. This is sure to be a feisty encounter at Goodison Park.

Man City have been underwhelming so far this season; certainly nothing like the treble-winners of 2022/23. The new world champions are currently five points off league leaders Arsenal and, to make matters worse, are missing some top talent. Norwegian goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland still can't train while Kevin De Bruyne is still in light training. Can The Citizens get back on track with a solid win before the New Year?

Everton have also had a disappointing season so far, despite the odd flash of brilliance. That said, the Toffees, who were docked 10 points for breaking Premier League profitability rules, are currently 16th in the table and seven points clear of the relegation zone. With four wins in a row after beating Chelsea and Newcastle, Sean Dyche’s men will clearly have the fans behind them at home on Wednesday.

The match is part of a 13-day period when there is at least one match on all but two of the days, at a time when many leagues around Europe take a winter break.

Here’s what you need to know:

What: Premier League

Who: Manchester City vs. Everton

When: Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023

Time: 3:15 p.m. ET

Where: Goodison Park, Liverpool

Tottenham ended Everton’s four-match winning run in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory on Saturday, thanks to goals in the first 18 minutes by Richarlison and Son Heung-min.

Richarlison, again playing in a central-striker role, swept home a first-time shot from Brennan Johnson’s right-wing cross to give Spurs the lead in the ninth minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son then scored his 11th goal of the campaign by converting into the bottom corner after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford parried out Johnson’s shot into the middle of the area.

The win lifted Tottenham into fourth place above Manchester City, which was inactive in this round because of its involvement in the Club World Cup.

Everton hadn’t conceded a single goal in its recent winning streak that came in the wake of the club being handed a 10-point sanction for financial mismanagement.

The visitors claimed a consolation in the 82nd minute through substitute Andre Gomes, who earlier thought he had set up England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a goal — only for it to be disallowed for a foul by the Portuguese on Emerson Royal in the buildup.

Everton substitute Arnaut Danjuma hit the crossbar in the sixth and final minute of stoppage time, having wasted two other chances as Sean Dyche’s team finished strongly.

The gap from Everton to the relegation zone was cut to four points after a win for third-to-last Luton over Newcastle on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side will kick-off at Goodison Park down in fifth place and eight points behind leaders Liverpool following their dip in form before the Club World Cup.

But City, who are sweating on the fitness of Erling Haaland, have two games in hand and saw both Liverpool and Arsenal drop points when they drew 1-1 with each other before Christmas.

City face a tough test against an Everton side who have found form under Sean Dyche and won four straight Premier League games before their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Everton will back themselves to seize upon any lingering vulnerability. Sean Dyche's side won four Premier League games in succession before suffering an unfortunate 2-1 defeat at Tottenham last weekend.

The Toffees, fresh off a 1-2 defeat to Tottenham that snapped their winning run, find themselves teetering on the edge of the relegation zone in 16th place. They hope a return to Goodison Park, where they’ve only claimed three wins this season, can spark a new surge up the table.

Manchester City, meanwhile, haven’t quite found their rhythm in recent weeks, with a draw and a narrow win in their last two matches. They currently sit outside the top four and desperately need three points to stay in the title hunt. Their away record offers some hope, having secured five wins and three losses on the road this season.
